How Toron collects, uses, shares, and protects personal information

Last updated: October 5, 2026

Toron helps students and professionals become sharper communicators one argument at a time. When you interact with Toron, you’re trusting us with your data, and we take that seriously. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, and protect your personal information when you use our services and when you visit our website.

Personal information is any information that can be used to identify you. This can include direct identifiers like your name and email address, it can include your interactions with our services, and information about the devices you use to access our services.

Here’s what this Privacy Policy covers:

  • Personal Information We Collect and Why
  • Who We Share Your Personal Information With and Why
  • How Long We Retain Your Personal Information
  • How We Protect Your Personal Information
  • Your Privacy Choices
  • How to Contact Us With Questions

We want this Privacy Policy to be easy to read. Where possible, we’ve organized it around what you’re doing when we collect your personal information. So instead of a long list of data types, the sections below tell you what we collect for each activity. Let’s dig in.

1. Personal Information We Collect and Why

1.1 When You Reach Out to Us

When you reach out to us to inquire about our services or for customer support issues, you might share with us the following information:

  • Contact information like your name, email address, zip code, and phone number.
  • Any information you provide us when you reach out like the contents of your inquiry and information you provide that would help us answer your question and resolve any issues with your account.

We use this information to respond to your inquiry, resolve your customer support issue, and service your account. If your inquiry relates to an existing account, we may need to review your account to help resolve the issue. We’ll keep a record of the details you share for as long as needed to fulfill our internal operations for which the data was collected.

Who we share it with

We share your information with our service providers to help us operate our services, including:

  • Customer support providers to track and respond to your inquiry
  • Email and communication providers to communicate with you
  • Customer relationship management tools to maintain a record of your inquiry
  • Cloud storage and hosting providers to securely store information

1.2 When You Create an Account

To create an account, we may ask you to provide your age, your role (as either a professional, educator, parent, or student), and your approximate location. We work with an age verification partner to help confirm your age. If you are an adult, you can create an account for yourself or on behalf of your child. If you are a minor, you’ll be prompted to have a parent or legal guardian complete the account registration. For users under 18, our Services require a parent to create an account on behalf of their child and separately allows the parent to maintain their own linked account to manage and oversee the child’s account. Toron is available only to users who are 10 or older. No one under 10 may use Toron. A parent provides the child’s date of birth during registration, and we do not activate an account for a child under 10. Parents manage their child’s consents and feature permissions through a parent consent portal operated by our age verification partner. If you create an account, we receive the following information:

  • Account and registration information like name, email, and mailing address. If you’re a parent creating an account on behalf of your child, we’ll receive this information from you as the parent, along with information necessary to verify that you are the child’s parent, and your verifiable parental consent. You’ll provide us with your child’s name, education level, and date of birth. You’ll also provide us with the username and avatar you select for your profile, and your profile bio.
  • Login credentials like your username and password needed to create your account (and if you created an account for your child) to authenticate access to your account.
  • Details to support your learning goals like your self-reported interests of debate topic domains and self-reported confidence level in your communication.
  • Payment details to support your subscription if you connect your bank account. While we use a payment processor to support this, we may receive metadata about the transaction (like amount, currency, timestamp, payment status, and payment method type), card metadata (like last 4 digits, card brand, and expiration month/year), and billing details (like your name, email, and billing address).

We use this information to create and manage your account, to communicate with you about changes to your account, or updates to our services or policies. We also use this information to personalize your learning experience that meets your goals and to improve our services.

Who we share it with

We share your information with our service providers to help maintain our services and support your account, including:

  • Age verification partner to obtain verifiable parental consent when adults create an account on behalf of their child
  • Database and identity management providers to store and manage account information
  • Payment processors to process and support your subscription with Toron
  • Hosting and cloud infrastructure providers to store and secure our data
  • We may share information about your child to users who also have a parent-managed account. Your child’s username, avatar, and profile bio will be visible to other users designated as friends and their parents.

1.3 When You Use Our Services

When you use our services, including when you visit our website, we receive:

  • Learning activity, which is a core part of our product offering. We collect and store information about your learning goals and your progress toward the goals you identified.
  • Audio data when you engage with a debate. Our systems process these recordings to give you feedback on how you can improve. This allows you to review specific moments in past debates alongside AI-generated feedback and compare your performance across debates over time to track your progress. Users (and parents of minors) can control audio data retention through account settings, including selecting a shorter retention period or deleting audio recordings immediately after each session.
  • We create transcripts from audio data when you engage with our debates. We use these transcripts to evaluate, develop, and improve our services. After a reasonable time period, we deidentify these transcripts so that they are not tied to any individual.
  • Video data, if you opt into video. Minors may participate in video debates only where parents have opted them in. As with audio data, this feature enables you to review specific moments and compare your performance over time. Parents can control video retention through their account settings, including selecting a shorter retention period or deleting recordings immediately.
  • We receive information automatically when you visit our website like your device and browser data like your IP address, device type, operating system, and browser type. This information is collected for diagnostics and abuse prevention and is retained only transiently, before being automatically deleted. We do not use this information for marketing and it is not retained beyond this short timeframe.
  • Cookies: we use a session cookie to keep you logged in while you use our services. We do not use cookies for advertising or cross-site tracking.
  • We may create de-identified data from the personal information we receive where permitted by law, by removing any identifiers and retaining deidentified data for research, analytics, and to improve our service.

When you debate against Toron AI. A core functionality of our platform is to help sharpen your communication by debating and practicing against our AI coach. To do this, you choose a topic to debate. Following the debate, you receive feedback on your strengths and areas to improve. In order to facilitate this feature, we receive your audio, transcribe the audio and then pass the transcription through our servers to large language models. We do not send name, age, or account information along with the transcript.

We partner with Deepgram to transcribe audio. Voice recordings of the exercise and debate sessions are converted to text using Deepgram’s speech-to-text service. This voice data is processed in real time. We have opted out of Deepgram’s model improvement and audio is never used to train models. Name, age, or account information are not sent to this provider.

We partner with artificial intelligence platforms like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google Gemini. AI-generated feedback is designed to support your learning and progress toward your goals. We integrate with the APIs of major providers of generative AI services and share transcripts to help support debates. Data shared with these platforms is securely transmitted, and we’ve disabled their ability to use the data shared to train their models. We do not share name, age, or account information with these providers.

We receive metadata about your debates, including date of debate, topic, and feedback provided back to you following your debate. We also receive a Report Card that scores your performance across your argument structure, evidence, rebuttal, and delivery.

When you debate with real users. Toron also allows you to debate against real users whom you’ve designated as Friends. For users designated as minors, this feature is only available to users whose parents have opted them in. We receive the following information:

  • If you’re under 18, we retain the parental consent needed to unlock this feature
  • Basic information about individual users you designate as Friends, like their username
  • Metadata about your debates, including date of debate, topic, and feedback provided back to you following your debate
  • Report Card that scores your performance across your argument structure, evidence, rebuttal, and delivery

When you use our platform we use the information we receive to offer the services and support your learning goals. We also use this information to understand how our services are performing, to understand what parts of our platform are used more frequently, identify bugs, troubleshoot, and improve functionality. We also process this information to maintain the safety and security of our website and our users.

1.4 When We Conduct User Research

We sometimes conduct user research to understand our customers and improve our services. We’ll only conduct research with adults and we do not permit minors to participate in user research. Research can be in the form of an emailed survey or a live group discussion. Our research is opt in. When we conduct user research, we receive the following information:

  • Name and email so that we may communicate with you
  • Survey responses to the questions we ask
  • Device identifiers like your device id and IP address if you’re completing a survey
  • Audio and visual recordings if we’re doing a live discussion. If we choose to record these research sessions, we’ll only record with consent from all attendees which we would gather prior to the call.

We’ll retain your information long enough to review your responses and complete our research. We sometimes work with service providers to help us conduct our research and they would also have access to this information. When we do, we’ll make this clear.

1.5 To Protect the Safety and Security of Our Services and Our Users

We value the safety of our platform. We collect information to protect the safety and security of our services, including the following:

  • Contact information like your name and email address
  • Interactions with our services like how you navigate across the platform and information you provide when you reach out to us. We also retain metadata about your debates with other users.

We’ll use your personal information to improve and ensure the safety and quality of our website, to protect the interests of safety or others, and to comply with law. We share this information with our fraud and security service providers, including our verifiable parental consent partner.

1.6 To Comply with Laws, to Protect Our Rights, or to Defend Against Legal Claims

We will share personal information where we are legally required to do so, such as in response to court orders, law enforcement or legal processes. We may also share information to establish or exercise our legal rights or contractual obligations, to defend against legal claims or demands, and to detect, investigate, prevent or take action against illegal activities.

1.7 If We Were Part of a Corporate Reorganization

In the unlikely event we enter into a transaction that alters the structure of our business, such as a merger or acquisition, your personal information would be part of the assets shared with third parties to complete the transaction. If we undergo bankruptcy or liquidation, personal information would be part of the liquidation assets and we would share your personal information as part of that transaction. In such a transfer, you will be notified.

2. Retention

We retain your information as long as your account remains active plus an additional 12 months following account closure or account activity. We retain this information to offer you our services, respond to your inquiries, and meet our operational needs as described above. We may retain information for a longer period where required to comply with a legal obligation or legal process, resolve a dispute, or enforce our agreements. In such a case, we limit our retention to that specific purpose. You may delete your account any time from within your account. If you delete your account, we will delete or deidentify your personal information within 60 days.

3. Children

This service may be used by children who are at least 10 and under 18, only through an account created by a parent or legal guardian. We do not allow children under 10 to use the service, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 10. We understand the importance of protecting the personal information of children. This is why we’ve implemented protections to help keep the personal information we process safe. We require that a child’s account be created by the parent or legal guardian. If we learn that a child’s account was created without the appropriate authorization, or that a child under 10 has used the service, the account will be deleted as soon as possible.

4. Your Privacy Choices

You have the privacy rights listed below, or if you’re under 13, your parent or legal guardian has these rights on your behalf.

  • Right to Access: You have the right to access your personal information and to know the types of personal information we collect and share about you. You have the right to know the sources from which we collected your information. You also have the right to know the third parties whom we share your information with and for what purposes.
  • Right to Delete: You have the right to delete your personal information.
  • Right to Correct: You have the right to correct your personal information.
  • Right Not to be Discriminated Against: You have the right not to receive discriminatory treatment as a result of you exercising any of these privacy rights.
  • Right to Appeal: You have the right to appeal a decision we’ve made in responding to your privacy request.

These rights are subject to some exceptions. For example, we would not reveal personal information of another individual in response to a request to access. In a response to a request to delete, we may need to maintain some limited data to comply with legal obligations.

We do not sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising or targeted advertising. Toron’s AI coach gives suggestions and recommendations on how to improve communication, but we do not make automated decisions that produce any legal effects.

5. Exercising Your Privacy Rights

Some rights can be exercised from within your account, like if you’d like to delete your account. To request any of the privacy rights above, email info@toron.io. We will respond to your request within 30 days.

6. Security

We implement appropriate security measures to protect the personal information we process. We process data pursuant to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. We apply safeguards to protect data, including encryption, access controls, and monitoring. While we implement these controls, no security measure is 100% secure and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may amend this policy from time to time. Where amendments result in meaningful changes, we will notify you and obtain your consent where required by law.
